FOX 7 helps raise thousands for patients at Dell Children's Medical Center

Friday, FOX 7 teamed up with MIX 94.7 to raise money for Dell Children's Medical Center.

All of the money will be used for the care and comfort of children and their families receiving treatment at Dell Children's.

About 220 children are seen at the medical center on a daily basis.

One of them is 8-year-old Jayden Gray. Gray, who is suffering from a heart infection, spends most of his time at the hospital participating in activities that make it feel more like a camp.

"You don't get bored, but sometimes you probably will get bored," said Jayden.

Money raised by FOX 7 and MIX 94.7 will help make the stay even more comfortable for children like Jayden.

"The money is going directly to the Dell Children's Family Fund. It provides comfort and care for patients we see every day," said Armando Zambrano, director of the Dell Children's Foundation.

The fundraiser brought in over $142,000, making this year even more successful than last year

Every dollar will help make the children at Dell more comfortable during their hospital stay. It will help provide everything from teddy bears, to rocking chairs, to sleeper beds, so parents can stay in the room with their children. Even the taxi ride to the medical center is covered.

"Dell has done an amazing job. Everybody in Dell, the nurses are awesome, the doctors are awesome, child life is awesome, it was a lot easier experience than I thought it was going to be," said Deserai Gray, Jayden's mother.

From arts and crafts to room service, it may seem like all fun all the time, but these activities are doing much more than that.

"For him it's all about the movies, there's a huge movie library available all the time upstairs. There's air hockey so when he felt like getting up we played air hockey," said Tami Vogel whose son is also a patient at Dell Children's.

"I know it sounds like fun things, but at the same time it's all therapy things," Vogel added.

About 225 kids are currently being treated at Dell and many of them will be there through Christmas, but that doesn't mean they will miss out on all the holiday cheer.

"Every toy that they give you, except the Xboxes and Wiis, you get to take home," said Jayden.

Thanks to the money raised, the children at Dell will have a holiday to remember.

Phone lines are now closed, but if you still want to donate you can log onto www.fox7austin.com and follow the link.
