Blue Santa delivers to sick children

Not everyone can be home for the holidays this year. Some are spending Christmas in a hospital.

Thursday, APD’s "Operation Blue Santa" made a stop at Dell Children's Medical Center for a special delivery.

For just a moment, six-year-old Kaleb may have forgotten he is a patient in a hospital.

Room by room, officers made their rounds in the hospital, delivering toys and goodies to anxious little people. There was one who was not so little, but not forgotten.

“I'm older and I thought they were going to skip my room. Once you get older you don't get things that you want anymore because life goes on,” eighteen-year-old Lorenzo Mantia said.

Lorenzo has been in Dell Children's for a week after his body started to reject his new liver. It's not the Christmas he was expecting.

“It is hard to be here because I'm missing being home with my family, with my mom celebrating Christmas with everybody,” Mantia said.

His health has not stopped him from losing the Christmas spirit.

“I feel very blessed. I want to thank everybody out there who got things for me and kids in the hospital,” Mantia said.

These presents being delivered by these officers was a nice break from the everyday challenges children face at the hospital.

“If we could just bring a smile, just for a moment, that makes me feel good too. We're blessed and I think we need to just appreciate that,” John Patrick Guardiola, Austin Police Department, said.

At a time when families are coming together around the country, Blue Santa is reminding folks that Christmas is not located in a house or in a department store, but in our hearts.

“It's just that time of season to give and share and just do something different than police work,” Guardiola said.
