Local wanted criminal arrested for shooting 2 Odessa police officers

A man wanted by Williamson County authorities is in a West Texas jail, accused of shooting two Odessa police officers.

Police say two officers went to Roy Daniel Garza's apartment in Odessa Wednesday to serve a parole violation warrant and Garza opened fire.

Sgt. Pete Gonzalez was shot in the arm. Officer Cory Wester was shot multiple times in the chest and legs. Both were in the hospital Thursday listed in fair condition.

Police say the shots would continue until Garza was arrested nine hours later.

Williamson County Jail records show Garza has had multiple run-ins with local law enforcement.

He's been in jail five times since 2012. Convictions include possession of a controlled substance, forgery of a financial instrument, and interference with an emergency call.

On October 2nd, Garza was booked in for two counts of aggravated robbery stemming from a 2012 incident in Round Rock. He was released on bond on October 8th.

On November 3rd, a warrant was filed for bail jumping and failure to appear in court on those robbery charges.

For the Odessa incident, Garza is charged with eight counts of attempted capital murder on a peace officer. He is being held in the Ector County Jail without bond.

Garza’s wife, Meghan Garza is also in jail. She is charged with hindering the apprehension of a known felon.
