SXSW founder behind "David Bowie" street sign change

According to South By Southwest Officials, "Someone sent us this GIF. We can’t vouch for it or it’s authenticity, but it looks real to us."

*Update*

FOX 7 has learned that SXSW Founder Roland Swenson and Austin sign maker Jason Carter are behind the "David Bowie" street sign change.

FOX 7 received an email from SXSW officials with the following message...

Someone sent us this GIF. We can’t vouch for it or it’s authenticity, but it looks real to us.

Who is behind this Bowie street sign change mystery?

The David Bowie Street sign was placed at Bowie and 5th Streets. The Austin Transportation Department says it did not put up the sign.

The department says it plans to leave the sign up until January 19 so that the community can enjoy the memorial to the late musician and pop culture icon. It will then take down the sign and put back up the real street name.

"We appreciate Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World and recognize David Bowie for all he did for the music industry and more," the department says.
