Concordia University Texas opts out of campus carry

Concordia University Texas has decided to opt out of the campus carry law. The announcement came in a press release from President Dr. Donald Christian.

Dr. Christian says in the statement:

“On June 1, 2015, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 11. Passed by the 84th Texas Legislature and known as the ‘campus carry’ law, it takes effect on Aug. 1, 2016, and allows licensed handgun carriers to carry a handgun while on Texas university campuses. Under Senate Bill 11, private universities were given the opportunity to develop campus carry policies that are appropriate for their respective campuses.

“In compliance with the law, we consulted with faculty, staff and students and after thoughtful consideration, Concordia University Texas is exercising the ‘opt out’ provision of this state law.

“Beginning today, my leadership team and I are working to communicate this decision with all University constituents, striving to answer any questions they may have prior to the law going into effect on Aug. 1, 2016.

“University leadership believes concealed handguns on campus present significant concerns and are not conducive to a positive learning environment.”
