Wendy Davis speaks out before Supreme Court HB2 arguments

Former Texas state senator Wendy Davis released a statement regarding Wednesday's Supreme Court oral arguments on HB2, an anti-abortion bill. Davis led a filibuster on the bill back in 2013.

The statement reads:

Tomorrow’s hearing at the Supreme Court of the United States will have implications that will affect women across this nation for years to come. This case is not solely about HB2 and a woman’s right to access safe and legal abortion. It is about a woman's fundamental right to control her reproductive destiny, which is intricately linked to her unalienable right to the pursuit of happiness and to the assertion that all are created equal. Absent reproductive freedoms, women will never achieve true equality.

The Texas abortion law, HB2, requires clinic physicians to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles and a separate provision would mandate that abortion clinics must have costly hospital-grade facilities.

Experts said the bill will reduce the number of abortion providers in the state to six and many agree the bill will have a serious impact on abortion access fearing many women will have to travel farther or go to more dangerous lengths to access abortion care.

HB2 was signed into law by Governor Rick Perry on July 18, 2013.
