AFD and APD team up to shop for presents and food for children

Members of the Austin Fire Department and Austin Police Department shopped 'till they dropped to make sure kids have presents under their trees and food in their bellies on Christmas Day.

Wednesday morning an AFD battalion chief and an APD assistant chief were given three minutes to gather up to $15-thousand dollars worth of merchandise at Sam's Club for Operation Blue Santa.

Each year the non-profit provides toys and food to 6,000 families. That's 20,000 children.

The firefighter and police officer ran and ran and gathered enough items to total $7-thousand dollars. The remaining $8-thousand will be covered with a check donation courtesy of the event sponsor-Retail Me No, Inc.
All items will be auctioned this Friday. Money earned will go toward the purchase of toys for the children.
