APD launching DWI No Refusal Initiative

The Austin Police Department is launching another No Refusal Initiative this weekend as it expects more people to be out celebrating Mardi Gras. Police remind drivers to find a safe ride home if they plan to drink.

The initiative starts on February 9th at 10 p.m. and runs through February 12th at 5 a.m.

Anyone suspected of driving drunk and who refuses a breathalyzer will be forced by court order to provide a blood or breath sample.

Police also held a No Refusal for Super Bowl weekend.

APD has been working to expand the initiative to all weekends in the hopes that fewer people drink and drive. Officers say even a few drinks can impair your driving.

Police say the best thing to do is have a designated driver but remind people there are plenty of options for you to get home safe. That includes public transportation, taking a cab or calling a ride sharing service.
