APD searching for suspect that attempted to kidnap infant child

Austin Police are looking for a woman who tried to kidnap a child from a South Austin neighborhood. The attacker tried to steal the one year old out of her mother's arms in front of their home on Deer Run Drive around eight o'clock Monday morning.

The victim, Delia, doesn't speak English. With her father Domingo translating, she told FOX 7 that she was headed to an appointment when a woman approached her. "Her husband goes to work earlier, he left earlier in the morning and the kids were going to school."

Delia said the woman drove up in a two-door red pick-up truck. Austin Police said it is an older model with tinted windows.

Delia said the woman asked her if she knew anyone selling a car, and Delia told her no, "then she said she the lady getting closer to her and she actually not to say anything and actually she pulled a knife on her."

That's when the woman tried to grab her child. The two struggled to the ground, Delia holding her daughter tightly. "She was actually fighting for her life," Delia said, adding, "that she had her daughter close to her body and said if I am going to die I am going to go with my daughter."

The woman grabbed something out of Delia's car and fled.

Delia and her daughter are safe.

The mother of six says though she usually lets her kids play outside with the neighbors, she'll think twice before letting any of her children out of her sight. Domingo said he'll be watching closely too.

Delia and her father believe the woman wanted to kidnap her child to sell it. Police are describing the woman as a heavyset Hispanic female in her 40's, who is 5'5. She was last seen wearing a white top under a black jacket and blue jeans. Police say she was wearing a black glove

She was the passenger in the truck. Delia said there was a man driving but she didn't get a good look at him.
