AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - Some Austin-area bakeries are raising awareness for Mental Health Awareness Month in an interestingly sweet way.
The Austin chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is joining forces with bakeries in the ares to host "Depressed Cake Shops" for the month of May in hopes of changing the conversation about mental health.
These Austin-area bakeries are confirmed to be participating according to NAMI Austin's website: Dream Bakery, Skull & Cakebones, Zucchini Kill, Cupprimo, Le Politique, Sugar Mama's Bakeshop, Capital City Bakery, Sugar Shaker Bakery, Kellie's Baking Company, Confituras Little Kitchen and Fat Cats.
According to NAMI Austin, each bakery has been tasked with featuring specially-decorated baked goods with an element of gray "to signify the gray cloud that can descend over a beautiful world when someone is struggling with mental health issues" and with bright colors to "represent the hope that always continues."
Each bakery will also pass out "conversation cards" to patrons offering suggestions on how to start the often difficult conversation about mental health.
