Austin City Council to decide fate of ridesharing, Lyft issues statement

In anticipation of tonights ridesharing ruling by the City of Austin Lyft has issued the following statement.

"We believe the city council's action should be guided by the over 65,000 Austinites who trust their voice of disapproval will be heard. Segregating rideshare drivers into different groups, with different economic opportunities - all without any benefit to public safety - hurts drivers, consumers and the City of Austin. The badge proposal on the table makes it harder for the people of Austin to find a safe, reliable and affordable ride."

Back in December, City Council approved a new ridesharing ordinance that would crack down on ridesharing companies.

The City of Austin is expected to make a ruling on ridesharing this evening.

Uber and Lyft have said if fingerprint background checks become a requirement, they'll leave the city.

On January 19th the coalition "Ridesharing Works for Austin" dropped off 65,103 signatures to the City Clerk's office.  Those signatures asked for ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft to not leave the city.
