Austin faith-based mission gives Thanksgiving dinners to those in need

Ranging from adults to children, the El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission showed not only what it means to be thankful, but also how to encourage the season of giving on Saturday.

"I'm glad that they get food and so they enjoy their Thanksgiving,” Henry said.

Henry Newby is a 2nd grader and his sister Caroline is in the 5th grade.

"These are the frozen turkey for people's Thanksgiving,” Caroline said.

Side by side they stuffed bags with frozen turkeys, sides, and dessert to help feed about 1,000 families in Central Texas. "Because they can't buy it,” she added.

El Buen Samaritano means "The Good Samaritan". The group has been working to raise money to give to the less fortunate for about 30 years now. As music played in the background, many folks lined up to pick up their package, making the occasion more joyful.

"They're offering to give away food and I came and they offered and it's been helpful."

And as families received the meaningful gifts to prepare at home, volunteers like Caroline said they understood the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Caroline said, "When you don't have food you're not feeling too well. So them being able to have food is just really nice."
