APD bomb squad responds after man robs Chase Bank, threatens occupants

"Business as usual' was interrupted at Chase Bank on the 9,000 block of North Lamar.

“A black male suspect entered the bank, demanded money and left with an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Austin Police Officer Destiny Winston.

Officer Winston says the suspect was last seen on foot heading south on Lamar.

Police say he's around 40 years old. 5’ 9” or 5’ 10” with a thin build.

Apparently he was wearing a tan mask and a dark-colored hoodie with a horizontal line going across it and some sort of logo in the upper left chest area.

Thankfully there were no injuries during the incident but what happened next, prompted a visit from the Austin Fire Department, Austin Travis County EMS and the APD bomb squad.

“During this incident an undisclosed threat was made that threatened the safety of the occupants of the bank so as a precautionary measure the occupants of the bank were evacuated,” Winston said.

AFD's special operations team stood by along with EMS to assist with fire or injuries if a bomb were to detonate.

An officer with APD's EOD unit or bomb squad carefully walked in with protective gear.

Later the team sent a robot in.

One might say this isn't your typical bank robbery scenario -- but as Austin Police points out, what is?

“Really with any of these types of calls that officers encounter, first responders, I wouldn't say there is any kind of typical type of call, we have to be ready to respond to pretty much anything that comes our way,” Winston said.

We asked Austin Police this afternoon if there is surveillance of this person. They didn't expect anything like that to be released today.
