Austin police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death at the Woodspring Suites Hotel in North Austin.

The hotel is located on the I-35 Frontage road near the intersection of Braker Lane.

Austin /Travis County EMS said they transported a man at the Woodspring Suites to the hospital around 2:45 Tuesday afternoon with what was reported to be a gunshot wound.

However, Austin police said they cannot confirm it was a gunshot and won’t be able to determine what caused the man’s death until a medical examiner conducts an autopsy.

“As soon as they got on scene, they located a male with penetrating trauma to his body. This man was transported to a local area hospital where, unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased soon there after,” said Sr. Officer Christopher Irwin with the Austin Police Department.

Police did have a person handcuffed outside the hotel following the incident, but would not say if that person was involved or considered a suspect.

“They’re still going through and canvassing the area, trying to determine a suspect at this time. We don’t feel there’s any immediate threat to the public. However, as always, we ask everyone to remain vigilant and if you see anything suspicious be sure you call 911,” Irwin said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to report that to the homicide tip line at (512) 477-3588.

Police said depending on autopsy results the case could be reclassified as a homicide.
