Austin Water says immediate action is needed to avoid running out of water and that this is an emergency situation.

According to Austin Water, treatment plants can currently produce about 105 million gallons of water a day. However, customers are currently using about 120 million gallons per day. They say reservoirs are reaching minimal levels. Austin residents are asked to reduce personal consumption by 15 to 20 percent.

Emergency water use restrictions have been issued effective beginning 10 a.m. on Oct. 22.

Austin Water's director issued the restrictions due to the high level of silt and debris in the city's water supply lakes as a result of recent flooding. That debris and silt has also forced Austin Water to issue a boil water notice for all of its customers until further notice.

Officials say the restrictions are needed to allow treatment plant operations to stabilize and to ensure water is available for firefighting and basic needs.

During the restriction period all outdoor water use is prohibited. Customers may not:

  • Use water for irrigation or testing of irrigation equipment
  • Wash vehicles, including at commercial car wash facilities
  • Wash pavement or other surfaces
  • Add water to a pool or spa
  • Conduct foundation watering
  • Operate an ornamental fountain or pond, other than aeration necessary to support aquatic life

Violators should be reported to 3-1-1.
