Austin winter storm brings cancellations and delays

The icy conditions have affected everything from schools, to public transportation, even rideshare companies.

Social media is calling it the icepocalypse. The Tuesday wintry mix caused Austin ISD and several school districts across Central Texas to cancel classes.

Tuesday night, Austin ISD made the decision to delay classes two hours for Wednesday.

The icy conditions also caused trouble for Cap Metro, who operated on a "Sunday" schedule with buses.

Rail along with Metro Express, pickup, Round Rock and Georgetown routes were out of service.

“Ice is a major event for both rail and bus service. It's very dangerous. people may not think of it this way, But it's actually more dangerous than snow,” said Mariette Hummel a spokesperson for Capital Metro.

Cap Metro will resume all service including rail, on Wednesday morning. The decision to close everything including rail Tuesday was best for passenger safety.

“Just as how the roads get icy and flaky and dangerous when driving on them, same thing happens on the rail,” said Hummel.

Rough road conditions also affected rideshare drivers.

Companies still are running, but customers should still expect some delays,

“From 183 to Mopac south, it was pretty icy. Also I found, on the trip from the airport, I was traveling down the east side up 183, that was pretty icy.

Kevin Vogl was going to start his shift early Tuesday morning, but waited until 10:30. and business was booming.

“I don't think I’ve gone more than like 5 minutes without a ride,” said Vogl.

However, it wasn't as busy for him at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA).

“I was like, there's no point in going out early to pick up and get early airport rides because guess what they're not flying,” said Vogl.

At Bergstrom, there were more than one hundred flight cancelations and delays.

However, as of Tuesday night, a spokesperson from the airport says things are getting back on track and should be much better come Wednesday.
