Body of an adult male found in Shoal Creek

- The Friday morning rush hour was just winding down when Austin police say a 911 call came in. A body was in the water where Shoal Creek flows under 6th St.

When first responders arrived, APD spokesperson Destiny Silva indicated it was clear a water rescue was no longer possible. "Due to the condition and the location of the body, we're not able to confirm or verify age gender or race,” said Silva.

It was later determined the body is that of a male. He was found near the bridge. The scene is close to a transient encampment which is located under the arch on the east bank. "We can’t confirm there is a connection at this time, however we are not going to rule anything out,” said Silva.

A man who camps in the area told FOX 7 Austin he doesn’t think the victim was part of Austin's homeless community. He watched the removal of the body and said the man was wearing shoes that appeared to be new.

Friday evening, the creek was filled with water. Investigators say its possible the body was washed down from another location upstream. It did ran over night but the amount of rainfall may not have been enough to push a body very far downstream.

Another man, who identified himself as Chris said he spends a lot of time in the area and offered his thoughts about the incident. "You have a lot of K2 use over on this side, the west side, now. It’s not just on the east side, it’s over here, so it’s a possibility of drug use here,” said Chris.

The body was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office where investigators hope an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
