Chris Kelley Memorial 5K held in Hutto

Three years ago Officer Chris Kelley was killed in the line of duty. His family and friends held their annual memorial run at Fritz Park in Hutto on June 23 in remembrance of him.

There's not a day that goes by for the Kelley family that they're not reminded of Chris.

"He was very modest. Very modest. A lot of integrity. He loved people," Chris's father Jack says. "He never saw anything bad in anyone that I know of."

Chris's life came to a tragic end in June 2015 when he tried to pull over Colby Ray Williamson for a traffic stop in Hutto. Officials say Chris and Williamson got into a struggle during the stop.

Wiliamson allegedly jumped into a Hutto police car and hit Chris before leaving the scene. Chris was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later.

Ever since Chris's death, his family has held a memorial 5K run. This year more than 400 friends and family participated.

Chris's wife Michelle says the run helps remind people of the person behind the uniform who was a husband, father, son and so much more.

"He was a great guy and we want to honor the fact that he laid down his life for his community. We want to honor the fact that not only was he a great person but there's so many great first responders and they need to be honored each and every day," Michelle says.

"We live in a world that not everyone agrees with that so we don't want to be that community. We want to be the community that loves our first responders," Michelle says.

Jack, who is a retired Austin police officer, says Chris followed in his footsteps from a young age. He says its comforting to see the community come together.

"We've learned to cope a little better but it's still very raw and will continue to be," Jack says. "But these are the things that help. Help you cope...these events. People just saying hello to you and giving you a hug. It helps you cope."
