Dump Truck crushes and kills worker in West Austin

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 46-year-old David Jur.

Workers in a West Austin neighborhood are doing their best to build the community piece by piece. However, that work was stopped while the Travis County Sheriff's Office and Texas DPS tried to piece together how a dump truck crashed on its side.

"The back of the truck was extending to let go of a load (of sand) and then, somehow, the balance was lost and the truck went over on its side," Kristen Dark, Travis County Sheriff's Office public information officer, said.

The incident happened at the intersection of McKay Cove and Buchanon Draw just north of Bee Cave near Highway 71. Dark said what happened next appears to be a tragic accident.

"There was a worker here on scene that was next to the truck and unfortunately that truck tipped over onto that worker," Dark said.

The victim, a white male in his 40's, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Travis County Sheriff's Office said the workers were performing routine construction on one of the homes nearby. Authorities did not identify the company the victim worked for.

"The investigation is in its early stages but all indications at this point in time are that this was an accident but the investigation is ongoing," Dark said.

Dark said the Travis County Sheriff's Office will assist Texas DPS in the investigation moving forward.

"It's an extremely tragic event and our hearts go out to the family of this individual. This time of year is a very joyful time and so tragic events are much harder. We just extend out our deepest sympathies," Dark said.

Texas DPS is leading the investigation and are expected to have more information available over the weekend. They did not release the identity of the victim.
