Exploring House of Torment

The number one haunted house in America is right here in Austin, according to HauntWorld.com. FOX 7 got a look at House of Torment and it's certainly grown from its somewhat humble beginnings.

"My partner actually opened the House of Torment in his front yard and garage in South Austin over 15 years ago," says co-owner John Austin-Love.

In 2003, House of Torment opened commercially and until this year it's been at the Highland Mall. Now it is off Ridgepoint Drive on the northeast side of town. It's bigger and badder with 40,000 square feet of scares.

"Inside the building are three completely different haunted houses, filled with three completely different storylines, character sets and themes," said Love.

They are called the Frenzy, the Dawn of Evil and Graveside Manor. You can certainly expect a Hollywood production and some unexpected scares.

Beware of moving and vibrating floors.

"This floor may be a little low tech but very fun so experience it yourself,” said Alex Burgaff, the GM of Mindspark which is one of the year-round attractions.

Not everyone makes it through the 45-minute attraction.

"Every night we have what we call walk outs where people just get too scared and elect to be escorted out and we walk them over to our wall of shame," said Love.
