Fatal officer-involved shooting in South Austin

The Austin Police Department is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in South Austin. An Austin police officer shot and killed a 25-year-old woman who charged at him with a knife. 

According to APD, the shooting occurred on Manchaca Road and Keilbar Lane. A large area around the intersection Manchaca and Keilbar was shut down while police investigated.

According to police, officers were responding to a 911 call about someone trying to blow up a house. When officers arrived on scene, a woman in her car attempted to run the officers over. The officers jumped out of the way to avoid the vehicle and then pursue the woman who attempted to run them over in a car chase.

Officers pursued the suspect in a car chase. The suspect hit another vehicle at the intersection of Manchaca and William Cannon and continued to flee. Other officers were in the area responding to this pursuit and the suspect attempted to run over another police officer and crashed into a telephone pole on Manchaca Road and Keilbar Lane.

The officer attempted to approach the vehicle and to give commands to the driver. As the officer tried talking to the driver, she stepped out of the vehicle and charged the officer with a knife. The officer opened fire on the suspect when he felt his life was in danger. 

The suspect died on the scene. Police received reports at the same time that shots were fired that the 25-year-old woman involved was attempting to commit suicide by cop.
