Fire at Austin Club believed to be intentionally set

Officials with the Austin Fire Department say they believe that a small fire at The Austin Club was intentionally set.

The Austin Club is located at 110 E. 9th Street and officials responded to the call at around 4 a.m. The fire was on the third floor and was controlled by the sprinkler system.

Crews remained on scene for a few hours to work on removing smoke and water from the historic building.

Officials say that they believe the fire was intentionally set. A suspect was taken into custody by Austin police. The suspect has been identified as Matthew Caldwell.

Caldwell is facing three charges including arson and burglary of a building.

The cause of the damage is estimated at $100,000.
