Firefighter suffered a medical emergency, caused accident on FM 620

A firefighter suffered a medical emergency while driving a firetruck, according to a preliminary crash investigation. The firetruck struck five other vehicles before rolling onto it's side and coming to a stop.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Lake Travis Fire and Rescue firetruck was traveling southbound on FM 620 on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 when the driver had a medical emergency and lost consciousness. The firetruck drove into the northbound lanes and oncoming traffic.

Five vehicles were hit by the firetruck before it rolled onto it's right side.

Two other vehicle struck debris that flew from the firetruck following the crash.

The firetruck came to a rest on it's right side, in the northbound bar ditch.

Battalion Chief Mike Prather said three of the four firefighters were treated and released. The firefighter who was driving the fire truck remained in the hospital and was in stable condition. “It was very scary all four of them have ten years or more and have spouses and children,” Prather said.

Prather added Straflight had difficulty landing because there were several drones in the area. "As Starflight was in route to render aid they had to actually wait to land to render aid until those drones cleared the airspace,” said Prather.

Lake Travis Fire Department released a statement on Twitter stating they were made aware of the DPS preliminary Investigation report:

"We are very concerned for the #LTfirefighter still in the hospital and concerned for the citizens who were involved today. We are focused on their recovery and look forward to a
complete investigation in the coming weeks or months."
