Free holiday meals given to area families

The Christmas spirit and season of giving was on full display Saturday afternoon for over 100 families across Austin.

"It's the time of season for Christmas and helping kids enjoy the holiday spirit," Steven Taylor, founder of Bh4kids, said.

That enjoyment was in the form of a gift. A gift to over 100 families and their children. A full course holiday feast, just in time for christmas.

"They'll show up with a wristband and we'll direct them to Santa Clause and then we'll walk them through so they can fill up their own box with everything they need for a complete family meal," Taylor said.

"Frozen turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread stuffing, green bean casserole, all the way down to sweet corn, and banana cream pie and we'll put instructions inside to help them plan that meal and prepare that meal," he said.

Thanks to the help of area churches and schools, families were able to sign up for the assistance. Families of Palm Elementary School were perhaps in need more than most.

"25 of our families were affected by the Halloween flood," Myrna Meza, a teacher at Palm Elementary and volunteer at Bh4kids, said.

As each of those families made their way down the row, the true spirit of Christmas shined through.

"We saw such beautiful happy smiles and faces as each of the families and the children were greeting Santa Clause and getting their food baskets," Meza said. "It brought tears to our eyes to see how happy our kids were to receive something."

Something more than a gift that would not only fill their stomachs but also their hearts.

"To be able to see the kids come in right now, knowing that they are going to get a full meal. Something they can look forward to and build that spirit. That's really what it is," Taylor said.
