Governor Abbott delivers Thanksgiving lunch for Meals on Wheels Central Texas

Governor Greg Abbott and First Lady Cecilia Abbott greeted and thanked volunteers at Meals on Wheels Central Texas Thursday morning -- volunteers who chose to spend their Thanksgiving preparing lunch for nearly 500 homebound Central Texans. H.E.B. helped with the cost of the food.

"We have roasted turkey, peas and carrots, a cornbread dressing and a spicy pumpkin cake for dessert," said Meals on Wheels Central Texas President and CEO Adam Hauser.

Hauser says Meals on Wheels Central Texas delivers about 3,000 meals each business day so Thanksgiving is a smaller group of clients but those deliveries are important.

"It's good to see a happy face. They're very nice," said Meals on Wheels client Audria Price.

Volunteers come visit Price for lunch each day.

But this Thanksgiving, her delivery came courtesy of Governor Abbott.

"Yes I'm about to meet the Governor and I am so excited about that. I never met him in person, I always see him on TV," she said.

The Governor spent a little time with Price's granddaughter Harmony.

"We're going to take Harmony with us here," he joked.

"It was so great to see Audria here and the smile on her face to be able to see that people care about her. Before this we stopped by and delivered a meal to a veteran, a Vietnam veteran. He was literally crying to know we were thinking of him," Abbott said.

"I'm just so thankful today. I'm thankful for my health and strength, just thankful to be here to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family. My first grandchild was born 4 months ago," Price said.

"We're thankful for the resiliency of Texans. Texas has been through a lot of challenges whether it be hurricane Harvey or the aftermath of Sutherland Springs and time after time we've seen Texans coming together and supporting each other," Abbott said.
