Homeless man arrested after deadly altercation

A homeless man has been arrested after a deadly altercation with another homeless man.

The Austin Police Department says Robert Batiste has been arrested for manslaughter.

The altercation happened just before 5:30 pm. on July 4. Police received a report of a disturbance in the 100 block of East 5th Street between two homeless men.

Officials say witnesses were performing CPR when first responders arrived and found an unresponsive man lying on the sidewalk.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m.

Several witnesses were interviewed on scene as well as Batiste who was at the scene.

Officials say based on witness video and statements from witnesses they arrested Batiste.

The victim has not been identified. The exact cause of death is still being determined.
