Honor Flight Austin celebrates Richard Overton's 112 birthday during fundraiser

America's oldest living World War II veteran, Richard Overton got a lot of attention at the Honor Flight Austin annual fundraiser Sunday.

The nonprofit organization has helped him, along with 2,000 veterans over the years. Giving them the opportunity of a lifetime and the chance to visit a memorial in Washington D.C dedicated to their service.

Bob’s Steak and Chop House partners with Honor Fight Austin each year, helping raise hundreds and thousands of dollars to go towards flights.

Bob’s Steak and Chop House owner Jimmy Fitzgerald said the experience of going on an honor flight introduced him to the importance of the charity.

“Just completely open my heart to you what a great cause to bring all these gentlemen that are referred to as the greatest generation that actually change the world," Fitzgerald said.

Volma Overton, Overton’s cousin said it wasn’t till Overton’s first visit on the Honor Flight they realized he was the oldest veteran. He said veterans often times feel forgotten.

"Older veterans never would've had this opportunity it would send for the honor flight and they are truly honored when they go up there," Overton said.

At the end of the evening Overton was surprised with a cake and a crowd singing Happy Birthday.
