Hostage negotiators end SWAT standoff in southwest Austin peacefully

For hours, hostage negotiators stayed on the phone with a man who barricaded himself inside his southwest Austin home and threatened to harm police.

APD received a call Sunday morning from a neighbor saying a man was shouting in the middle of the street and appeared to be under the influence.

When officers arrived Senior APD Officer Bino Cadenas said the situation escalated. "The male then ran back inside his household yelling that he was going to harm and shoot the officers," Cadenas said. "Officers carefully approached the residence and saw that the subject was manipulating a firearm."

Two other people were in the home at the time.

Police evacuated neighbors and were able to get the two people out of the home safely.

After three and a half hours, the man surrendered himself to APD. He was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation. Cadenas said APD will not be pressing charges.

The SWAT standoff didn’t come as a surprise for neighbors living on Kimono drive. Jeannie Ramirez a neighbor said in the past she's seen the man scream obscenities and knock down people's trashcans.

"The police came two different police officer's in two different vehicles came and I remember telling them that he's a time bomb waiting to go off," Ramirez said. "He's going to come back to our neighborhood eventually. He's been on the police radar so I want to know what happens from here on out that's what I want know."

Cadenas said police searched the home for a weapon, whether the weapon belonged to the man has yet to be confirmed.
