Human bones found on UT property in northwest Austin

Crime scene technician's work through the morning Thursday in a wooded area near the intersection of Breaker Lane and MoPac. Investigator say a grounds crew with the UT Pickle Research Center was doing a routine maintenance patrol on the West Campus site when what appeared to be human bones were found.

"It looks like the deceased has been there for some time. At this point, we don't see any signs of criminal behavior or an ongoing threat,” Said UTPD Lt. Greg Stephenson.

The area is a large patch of green surrounded by a dense commercial and multi family residential zone. The bones were found in an area where transients have been known to set up camps.

"Anytime you have a green belt that's always an issue, and we do come out here and posted signs showing that this is UT property and trying to alleviate that, but yes we will have camps out here sometimes,” said Lt. Stephenson.

Investigators will not say if the bones found near a campsite.

Dental and DNA analysis will be used to make identification. To help with identifying the remains, UT investigators say they have requested assistance from APD.
