Ice lead to morning crashes

The icy conditions made for a dangerous travel situation Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning sleet transformed the lanes of I-35 from grey to white. The ice fell heavy at times, creating a snow-like appearance.

The drivers we spoke with only seemed to be out because they didn't have a choice in the matter. Daniel Crumb was enjoying having the school day off, but had to make an unexpected run to the airport after his dad's flight was canceled.

"I was worried about the ice and stuff. I had to heat my car up for a good 15 minutes before I got on the road, but I think everything is fine at the moment,” said Crumb.

Luis Tirado had to go to work.

"I'm from Buffalo, New York but this out here is crazy. This is the reason why I moved away from there. I tried to get away from the cold. It followed me somehow,” said Tirado.

The upper and lower deck split proved to be a problematic spot. An 18-wheeler got into an accident blocking traffic for more than an hour.

Tow truck driver Mike Collums had busy morning.

"There was a couple up on 290, a box truck, there was a semi on the side of the road, out on Southwest Parkway a lady hit a guardrail and spun her car out,” said Collums.

After responding to so many incidents, he shared with us how he manages to stay safe.

"This is nothing for me. I'm from Minnesota. I'm driving slow,” said Collums. “You just need to slow down,”
