Lexington ISD cancels classes due to flu

Lexington Independent School District officials have announced that classes will be canceled Thursday and Friday because of a high number of absences due to the flu.

In a release on its website, officials say because Monday, Feb. 18 is a school holiday this means students will not be returning to class until Feb. 19.

Officials say custodial staff will be "doing a rigorous & thorough deep clean of the school and busses" and that they hope the long weekend will help reduce the spread of symptoms and give those sick, time to recover.

The full letter concerning the closure sent to parents, staff and the community from Lexington ISD Superintendent Dr. Tonya Knowlton can be found here.

This is not the first school district in the Central Texas area to be forced to shut down due to the flu.

McDade ISD and Lago Vista ISD both canceled classes for a short time in January.
