Local DJ going on Courage Walk to help veterans

Walking 100 miles in four days. That's the goal set by Mix 94.7 DJ Jay Styles and it's all to raise to help veterans with PTSD.

The money that Styles is raising will go to the Austin Dog Alliance which has a program called Hounds for Heroes.

Styles walked in Cedar Park on his first day and is walking in the Georgetown and Round Rock area today. He is averaging about 25 miles a day to make the 100 miles trek.

Styles says that it's not about him but about all the veterans out there who are struggling with PTSD.

"I'm out here, one, to raise awareness, our vets need our support, and then two, to bring service dogs into the lives of our vets. They save lives and with 22 veterans killing themselves every single day, it is an epidemic and its the little that I can do for all they have done or us and protecting our freedom," Styles says.

The cost to train one service dog is between $12,000 to $15,000. It takes six to eight months of intensive training to prepare the dog for public access and to provide three or more special tasks to help their veterans overcome symptoms of their disability.

Statistics show that 15% of veterans are challenged by PTSD and in the U.S. it's estimated that a veteran commits suicide every 65 minutes.

You can do more than donate you can join Styles during the final stretch of his walk. You can walk the Last 5K with Jay on Saturday, April 16 at 9 a.m. at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock.
