Longhorn community celebrates life and legacy of former UT football player

The Longhorn community remembered one of their own Thursday night, former UT football star Cedric Benson.

One by one those who knew and loved him stood up in front of the University Baptist Church and shared their favorite stories.

Benson’s younger brother held back tears as he spoke about Benson being a role model.

Will Matthews, former teammate and longtime friend of Benson's said Benson was a leader.

“They were mostly touched by him through the game but the game was only the entry point what’s really touching people is the strength that, that man had," Matthews said. “To be truthful with yourself, know who you are and be a rock so nobody can shake you that’s what I learned from him.”

On August 17th Benson's motorcycle collided with a mini van on Mount Bonnell and FM 2222, killing him and his passenger UT alumna Aamna Najan. Flowers were placed near the crash site memorializing the young couple.

Najam earned her PHD in audiology and was working at Anyplace MD in Cedar Park. The company said posted a statement online saying she was a bright light serving the senior communities.

Benson joined UT in 2001 and was a dominant force ever since. The UT head coach at the time said he was the resurgence of the Longhorns. His football career carried on to the NFL for 8 years. Benson's hard work and perseverance left a lasting impact on anyone who came in contact with him.

Funeral services for Benson will be held Saturday morning at the St. James Missionary Baptist Church.
