Man dies after overnight shooting near APD headquarters

Austin police are searching for the suspect who killed one man overnight in downtown Austin. They have identified the victim as 29-year-old Derrick Armstrong.

Police say at around 1:40 a.m. they received multiple calls of shots fired. Callers reported that a man had been shot several times.

When first responders arrived to the scene they found Armstrong. Armstrong was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead at around 2:30 a.m.

Police interviewed witnesses who told them that two men had been in the area near Waller Creek in the 600 block of Sabine Street and that the two men had argued and then separated.

 

 

The suspect returned to confront Armstrong again and during this argument a gun was taken out and the suspect fired multiple rounds at Armstrong. The suspect fled the scene. He is described only as a black male, about 20 years of age and with a thin build.
