Mental health crisis leads to SWAT situation

Austin police say a 20-year-old man has been taken for treatment after a mental health crisis led to a SWAT situation in South Austin.

A call came in around 9 a.m. on Tuesday about a domestic disturbance on Shadowbend Road.

Sgt. Ryan Herring with APD says it was a 20-year-old man having a mental health crisis.

A family member of the man made the call. APD says they arrived within 10 minutes. The man threatened officials with a baseball bat, shattering glass from the windows and doors. Soon after SWAT was called to the scene.

Residents were asked to evacuate and some streets were blocked off while the situation was being handled, which APD says took about an hour.

"The decision was made to have SWAT come out to have more resources available to try and talk the individual out. Once SWAT got set up that's when the individual decided to come out on his own," Herring says.

"In the end, which is a good one, no one is injured and he's going in for help," he adds.

PIO for APD Destiny Winston says SWAT was in full tactical gear during this situation because they never know how a situation may progress, and as first responders they have to be prepared for anything.
