MLK Day of Service set to help local food banks

Thousands of people across the country are set to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday. Here in Austin, volunteers are honoring his legacy by setting up service projects at local nonprofits.

Saturday, dozens of Austinites honored Dr. Kings vision by volunteering at the Central Texas Food Bank. Volunteers lending a helping hand took time to sort and prepare food boxes.

The meals will go towards helping those who suffer from food insecurity.

City of Austin AmeriCorps member Adam Jones joined his team of volunteers and said the event shows how much heart people have and how they're willing to help.

"I like to see people from all different walks of life here. It's nice that people just volunteer some of their time to a good cause. We want to help the people who are not in a well position. All the work is a good indicator of our city and how people care," said Jones.

All the meals will go directly to those who are in need.

Over 8,000 meals were provided at Saturday's event.
