New Braunfels bakery celebrates sesquicentennial

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Tuesday, Naegelin’s Bakery celebrated 150 years of business in New Braunfels. 

Edouard Naegelin moved to New Braunfels in 1868 with a sack of flour and less than a dollar in his pocket. He started Naegelin’s Bakery, selling fresh out-of-the-oven bread to people in the town. The bakery has since been sold to the Granzin family, but it’s still a New Braunfels landmark 150 years later. 

“You just smile when you walk in,” said Carrie White who has been visiting Naegelin’s for more than 20 years.  

From bread to cookies, pastries and pies, Naegelin's Bakery takes the cake as the go-to stop for those with a sweet tooth in New Braunfels.  

“We are the oldest bakery in Texas,” said current owner Ross Granzin.  

“I've been coming here probably since ‘81 or ’82,” said Virgie Walker who lives about an hour away from the bakery.  

While the Seguin Avenue shop celebrates its own history, with pictures of the original bakery and the Naegelin's lining the walls, the food sold there has made history of its own with customers. 

“So we got our wedding cake here in 2001,” said Walker. 
 
“It's just been a favorite from the time my little girl was little enough to walk in these doors,” White said.  

110 years after the Naegelin's started the bakery, Ross Granzin's father was offered a deal too sweet to pass up. 

“I remember coming up here, it was like when I was 16 years old, and we came up here. He said we looked at it, sold our house and bought this place and here we are,” Granzin said.  

The Granzin's have never moved or renamed the shop and they don't plan to anytime soon. 

“We're the third oldest business here in New Braunfels,” said Granzin.   
                
Although no one from the Naegelin family works there any longer, the bakery continues to use the original pastry recipe’s passed down through the years.
