New video shows suspect in chase before fatal officer involved shooting

An investigation is underway into a deadly officer-involved shooting in Southeast Austin.

APD says officers were forced to shoot a man who stole a taxi and lead them on a chase and then pointed a gun at them.

Monday night Corey Amdur caught video of police pursuing a taxi through the HEB parking lot off William Cannon in south Austin.

Jonathan Moncada says he saw it too, "He was just going around in circles in the parking lot."

Little did Moncada know the taxi would come to a stop at the gates to the mobile home park where his mother and sister were still at home.

"They say there's a guy they have a gun and they're shooting. I said ‘what’ and I grabbed my dad and my daughter and get out,” said Sonia Guerrero.

Police say the man driving the taxi initially got into a disturbance and then was involved in what was reported as a kidnapping.

"He was a passenger in the cab and ultimately, when we got to the 4800 block of Nuckols Crossing and our officer attempted to stop the vehicle. At that point the cab driver got out of the vehicle and the cab driver jumped into the front seat and took the cab,” said APD Interim Chief Brian Manley.

When the taxi came to a stop at the Chateau at Onion Creek Mobile Home Park, Interim Chief Brian Manley says officers saw that the suspect had a gun. Manley says he held it to his head, then pointed it at officers. Nearby homes were evacuated.

"At 6:42, officers reported that the suspect pointed the gun at them again, at this point officer fired their weapons,” said Manley. “At 6:44 the suspect was still talking with negotiators again in attempts to get him to put the weapon down so that we could end the situation. And then at 6:48 pm officers fired again at the suspect. At this point the suspect stopped responding to the officers’ commands."

The man was pronounced deceased.

The cab was riddled with bullet holes.

The Guerrero family heard the gunfire.

"There were a couple, a couple times. They are just terrible. I never hear those in my life,” said Guerrero.

In addition to the damage to the taxi cab, it appears several bullets struck one of the mobile homes.

"We were scared because that never happened, this situation,” said Guerrero.

Seven officers are on administrative leave as is customary. Manley says they tried everything to avoid the deadly outcome.
