No charges for APD officer who used pepper spray in arrest

A Travis County Grand Jury has cleared Austin Police Officer Cameron Caldwell for a controversial public intoxication arrest he made during South by Southwest this year.

A member of the Peaceful Streets Project captured video of the arrest in the early morning hours of March 17. It showed Officer Caldwell pepper spraying Tyrone Wilson while Wilson was in handcuffs. In a police report Caldwell said he pepper sprayed Wilson, who was visiting from Chicago, because Wilson kept kicking the doors of the police transport van, after repeated orders to stop.

The Austin Police Department launched an internal investigation. In late August, then Police Chief Art Acevedo suspended Caldwell for 45 days without pay.

The Travis County DA's office says the grand jury heard nine hours of testimony from four witnesses.
