Officer hurt in DWI pursuit

An investigation is underway after an officer was run down in East Austin. A suspect has been taken into custody and an officer has been released from the hospital.

It all started around 12:30 a.m. in the area of Munson Street and Mark Circle.

Officials say a driver appeared to be driving while intoxicated on Airport Boulevard at high speeds. Police say they began to pursue the driver into a neighborhood.

The driver refused to get out of the car when one of the officers approached. The suspect reversed the car knocking the officer down and under the vehicle.

A second officer shot at the suspect, hitting the car. The suspect fled the scene causing another pursuit, which ended with spike stripes.

The officer who was knocked down was taken to a hospital, treated for his injuries and later released. He is a 19 year veteran.

The second officer, who shot at the suspect, has been placed on administrative leave.

The suspect is described as a 25-year-old Hispanic male. Police say he had other warrants out for his arrest in Travis County.
