Parts of Central Texas could see a wintry mix

In the wake of Saturday’s strong cold front, Sunday morning temperatures will likely cool to below freezing around the Hill Country. This light freeze will linger through the mid-morning hours before warming up.

During this time, an upper level disturbance will move in from West Texas. This disturbance will energize the atmosphere enough to spur a few showers and patchy drizzle, especially west of the I-35 corridor.

With surface temperatures near freezing Sunday morning, this precipitation could come in the form of freezing rain and sleet.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Lampasas, San Saba, and Mason Counties starting midnight Sunday through 12 p.m.

The Winter Weather Advisory for Blanco, Gillespie, Burnet, and Llano Counties will begin at 3 a.m. Sunday and continue through 6 p.m. Sunday evening.

Any wintry precipitation that does fall in the Hill Country will likely result in a glaze of ice on elevated structures like overpasses and bridges, making travel hazardous. Motorists are urged to use extra caution throughout the day Sunday.

While some of this wintry mix may briefly affect the western portions of Travis and Williamson Counties, the I-35 corridor and Austin metro area will likely remain above freezing. Any wet weather there, and throughout the rest of Central Texas, would be in liquid form.

Ahead of any weather-related impacts, the Texas Department of Transportation tweeted out Saturday afternoon that major roadways in Williamson County would be treated for potential icing.

FOX 7 meteorologists will be monitoring conditions through the weekend and providing updates on-air and on social media.
