Police: 21-year-old accidentally runs over boyfriend while intoxicated

UPDATE: A San Marcos man is dead after being run over. The person behind the wheel, police say, was his girlfriend. Officials and a friend we spoke with, are calling it accidental.

The night started out with drinks at a local bar and ended tragically. The girlfriend, Elizabeth Buchanan, 21, faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter.

It was a scary wake up call for Ashley Price and her roommates, the sound of screaming from right next door.

"I came out and there was, I saw someone laying on the ground," says Ashley Price, friend of Buchanan.

San Marcos Police tell us Buchanan and her 33-year-old boyfriend Joshua Horn were out drinking at a local bar late Tuesday night.

They had a disagreement which ended with Horn returning to their home on Sagewood Trail.

A few hours later, Buchanan drove back and reportedly ran over her boyfriend in the driveway. Police believe it was an accident and that Horn was either sitting or lying down when it happened.

"I've never seen anything like that before in my life. You know, just complete panic and again, for people that we know. It kind of hit hard, especially for all of us too because we've known her for so long and we knew him," says Price.

Buchanan reportedly called 911 and attempted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. They performed CPR but were unsuccessful. Horn died at the scene.

A tragedy for neighbors and friends of the couple. They all used to work together.

"We were standing right here at the door. My roommate went over to talk to her but again, she was just frantic. She didn't want to be touched. She was just in shock, you know, as best as I can explain it. It's natural though, for anybody. The cops sat her down and they were just like, 'do you remember what happened?' She said 'yea,'" says Price.

Buchanan was taken into custody at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center. She is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony.

"Yea, she was sweet. She's outgoing, that's why this whole thing took everybody by shock. Everybody was super upset in here," says Price.

Intoxication manslaughter carries a penalty of two to 20 years behind bars and up to a $10,000 fine.
