Police have identified the 21-year-old scooter rider who died after being hit by an Uber driver last week, according to the Austin Police Department.
Officials say the incident happened on Feb. 1. around 12:52 a.m. near the service road of N. Interstate 35 and E. 6th Street.
According to the preliminary investigation a 2006 silver Volkswagen Jetta was traveling southbound in the right lane of N. I-35 on the service road when the driver of the Jetta changed lanes to enter the ramp.
Officials say the driver then hit a Lime scooter. The Uber driver remained on scene and is cooperating as this investigation continues police say.
The toxicology results in this case are still pending.
Police say the pedestrian identified as a 21-year-old Mark Sands was on the scooter and was traveling the wrong way, northbound in the southbound lane of the I-35 service road.
Sands was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

According to APD this is Austin’s fifth fatal traffic crash of 2019, resulting in five fatalities this year.
Police reported during this time last year, there were six fatal traffic crashes and seven traffic fatalities.
