Police say suspect pronounced dead, after SWAT standoff and officer-involved shooting

- Update: A suspect that led officers in a police chase that ended with an officer-involved shooting was pronounced dead at the scene said Interim Chief Brian Manley.

According to Interim Chief, a SWAT standoff ensued in Southeast Austin when a taxicab was hijacked.

According to APD it happened in the 4900 block of Edge Creek Drive.

Police said a 911 call came in around 5:31 p.m. Monday evening. Officers arrived at 4800 Nuckols Crossing for reports of a disturbance between roommates and a possible kidnaping.

Around 10 p.m. the Austin Police Department held a press conference. Interim Chief Brian Manley described how the incident unfolded.  Manley said officers arrived on scene around 5:39 p.m. and conducted a high risk felony stop on the vehicle that the suspect was reportedly in.

At some point the driver exited the cab and the suspect got behind the wheel and drove away said Manley.

A short while after, police located the cab and attempted to stop the suspect. According to Manley officers saw that the suspect was armed with a gun. Manley said the suspect attempted to ram apartment gates but was unsuccessful.

Around 6:39 p.m. officers said the suspect pointed a gun at them said Manley. Officers opened fire at the suspect after the suspect pointed the gun at them a second time said Manley.

“Before any shots are fired you can hear our negotiator telling the suspect to drop the weapon. In total there were seven officers that fired their weapon during this engagement. And is our standard practice all seven officers will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is reviewed," said Manley.

APD is still investigating.
