Round Rock community mourns loss of Officer Charles Whites

The Round Rock community continues to mourn the loss of fallen officer Charles Whites.

Whites was a 19 year patrol officer, field training officer and SWAT negotiator. He died on April 27 from injuries he sustained while responding to a deadly hit and run in late February.

Law enforcement stood at attention as a hearse carrying Whites was escorted to a funeral home on Friday.

The Blue Line Bass Club was set to host an open bass tournament to help raise money for medical costs for Whites when the group heard of his death. They decided to pass along any money raised to Whites' wife and gathered to honor their fellow outdoorsman.

60 boaters, all first responders, attended the benefit tournament including Austin police officer Bobby Townes.

Townes says it's in times like these that brothers in blue need to stick together the most. The Austin Police Department is no stranger to losing a colleague in the line of duty.

In September 2016, Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq was killed when a driver crashed into his motorcycle while he was escorting a funeral procession.

Whites' service will not be forgotten. His longtime friend, Brent Smith, says he hopes the community will continue to remembers Whites and his dedication to helping others.

Another fundraiser was held Sunday at the H-E-B off University in Round Rock. It was put on by Texas Rural Fire, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, the Williamson County Constable's Office and the Austin Police Spouses Association.

The fundraiser collected donations from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and all the food and item donations will be divided between all of the departments helping with funeral services for Officer Whites.

All money will be given directly to Whites' family.
