San Marcos coach arrested for improper relationship with student

A middle school coach and teacher has been arrested for an improper relationship with a student in San Marcos.

According to the San Marcos Police Department, Rodney Guerrero has been arrested and charged with engaging in sexual contact, sexual intercourse, or deviate sexual intercourse with a person who is enrolled in the school at which he worked.

According to the affidavit, the victim reported the inappropriate relationship to authorities.

The victim told police officers that she met Coach Guerrero when she was in sixth grade and attending Goodnight Middle School. In August of 2016, her freshman year of high school, the victim was talking to Coach Guerrero when he saw pictures of her in a two piece bathing suit on her phone.

Guerrero than asked the victim to take more pictures of herself to show him.

In April 2017, the two began exchanging explicit photos of each other and began their relationship.

The inappropriate relationship continued into June of 2018.

During the course of their investigation, police officers found an audio recording the victim described of her breakup with Coach Guerrero. During the recording, Guerrero asks the victim for pictures and videos. THe victim told Guerrero that she did not think they should do that anymore.

Following the investigation, Coach Rodney Guerrero was arrested and charged by the San Marcos Police Department with having an inappropriate relationship between an educator and student.

San Marcos CISD released a statement that reads:

“Earlier this summer, law enforcement officials contacted the district regarding allegations of possible misconduct by a Goodnight employee. The district immediately placed the employee on administrative leave and cooperated with law enforcement.  While the district was cooperating with law enforcement officials during the investigation, notification to the community on the allegations was based on when the police would allow the district to share any information. A letter to the campus community will be sent home informing them of the situation that has taken place.  In San Marcos CISD, the safety of our students is paramount as we strive to maintain a safe learning environment for all students.”

According to the Texas Education Agency, improper student/teacher relationships are a major problem in Texas.

"We've opened 401 cases involving an inappropriate relationship with a student or  minor. That's an 11 month number. That is up from the 302 cases that we opened for the 2016-2017 fiscal year,” said Lauren Callahan, spokesperson for the Texas Education Agency.
