Search for Cameron road hit and run driver continues

We now have pictures of the pickup police believe hit and killed a three-year old boy Sunday. Residents who live in the neighborhood are mourning the death of this child, but they say based on the traffic changes they've seen over the years, they're not surprised something like this happened.

Austin police need your help finding the driver of this car. They released these photos, snapped by a Capital Metro bus. The truck is an early 2000's model Chevy Silverado 2500. The truck has a ladder, and a cowboy hat is sitting on the dashboard. Police believe this is the truck that struck three year old Ethan Hernandez.

“It kind of solidifies what the suspect vehicle looks like,” Lt. Blake Johnson, Austin Police Department, said.

Police say Hernandez was walking with his parents in the crosswalk on Cameron Road around 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The driver of the pickup was turning off of Briarcliff Blvd. onto Cameron, hit the boy, and kept going.

“I’m a father, many of the officers, men and women who investigate this incident are mothers and fathers and have children of their own so it hits home,” Johnson said.

Neighbors were stunned when they heard the news.

“When I drove up about 5:30, I saw the police car was there so I just went and did what I had to do. I came back home and I saw it on the ‘Next Door’ website, I realized that was the three-year-old and it really broke my heart,” Stephanie Villard, neighbor, said.

Dexter Mcrae has gone to this church near the intersection for more than 20 years. He says he is seeing more crashes now that the city got rid two driving lanes and added a bike lane.

“It's so congested now since they got down to one lane. There were accidents before but not like there is now,” he said.

Police stress the importance of the public being on the lookout for this truck. It could bring closure to the Ethan Hernandez's grieving family.
