The man involved in a chase last week in Bell and Williamson counties had a criminal history, new details revealed on Monday.
A welfare check was underway for 39-year-old Fort Hood Soldier Alva Joe Gwinn last week when his car was found near Florence.
Gwinn fled the scene and led officers on a high-speed chase. Eventually Gwinn got out of the car and ran onto private property. He had a gun and shot at least once at officers, who returned fire. Gwinn, however, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Bell County released an affidavit on Monday, Oct. 16, saying Gwinn had been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child who was 13 at the time of the assault. Gwinn would have gone to trial for that case in just a few weeks.
