Souper Bowl of Caring kicks off

Souper Bowl of Caring is youth across the nation working to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities around the time of the Super Bowl football game.

In the weeks leading up to or on Super Bowl Sunday, young people, many using a soup pot, take up a collection. They ask for $1 or one item of food for people in need. 100% of the donation goes directly to the local hunger relief charity of their choice.

In 2014, more than 10,000 groups collected more than $8 million in money and food for charities. That brought the total since the movement began in 1990 to more than $100 million.

Austin kicked off its initiative with a pep rally at Travis High School. The community wide campaign runs January 8 and runs through February 7, Super Bowl Sunday.

The Central Texas campaign has a 2016 goal of generating enough food and money to provide 1.6 million meals to hungry neighbors throughout the region.
