South Austin home destroyed in fire

A pet has died and a home is destroyed after a fire on Texas Sun Drive between William Cannon and Slaughter Lane. It happened around 6 p.m. on December 23.

Huge flames were seen shooting through the roof of the two story home when firefighters got there. Crews had to get out of the house soon after they went in because of concerns it would collapse.

Two people were inside of the home when the fire broke out. They were able to escape thanks to working smoke detectors.

Investigators say the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

The damage is estimated at more than $200,000.

The two residents of the home are staying with family. Their dog is still missing.
